ThrowBackThursday – MK1 Madness!!

#ThrowBackThursday this week is…

Back in 2004 Rachael had her VW Golf mk1 featured in VW Motoring magazine. Have a read through the article about one of the first Mk1 Golf 1.8t 20v conversions to be done in the UK, if not Europe at that time.

Those of you who know Rachael, will know that she is VW obsessed. She will chew your ear off talking cars all day long. Have a look through the first magazine feature she had on her VW Mk1 Golf.

She bought the car back in 2002. It had a solid shell but didn’t run too great. With a bit of help Rachael soon got the car running as it should. With the car running, she was eager to have her car looking the best. So she began returning the car back to a Campaign model. Whilst the car was in pieces at the body shop, the idea of the 1.8 20vt conversion was born and the rest you can read in the magazine.

Preston Motorsport Club Rolling Road Event

Preston Motorsport Club organised a Rolling Road Event at ADE Tuning.

Preston motorsport club ADE Tuning

Preston Motorsport Club was formed by enthusiasts for enthusiasts. Their aim is to assist and introduce new people into motor sport. They have the knowledge and skills available for you to become involved in any aspect of motor sport you wish. Rallying, sprints, hill climbs, circuit racing, motorbikes, off road, marshalling, organising and running events etc. They feel passionate about enabling people to compete in a world that for some feels so very far away.

Rolling Road

We were contacted by the club about holding a rolling road event for their members to put their cars on the dyno to see what power they are making. After checking the diary we found a date and booked them in.

We got the tea and biscuits in and got the straps out for the dyno.  A fantastic selection of cars and members turned out, whether they were putting cars on the dyno or just supporting.

Here are the dyno graphs from the rolling road…

Modified VW Polo TDI Custom Remap

Volkswagen Polo Custom Remap

vw polo custom remap ade tuning

We where contacted a couple of weeks ago by our customer who was interested in ADE Tuning custom remapping his VW Polo after he had fitted a few modifications to it. The VW Polo before the conversion would have been running around 100bhp. As with all our custom remaps we dyno the car to find out what power it is making before we work our magic. Obviously this car came with the modifications already fitted and made a respectable 128bhp. Also by running the car before on the dyno we can spot any potential problems before remapping. We won’t remap a car unless it is running 100% as the underlying issue will can’t be cured by a remap, it will only hide the issue until a later date.

Modifications

Looking at the car when it arrived you can tell it is his pride and joy and he even told me that he had got up early to wash his car in the rain before making his hour drive to get to us. As I have already mentioned the owner had already fitted a few modifications ready for the custom remap to be written for the car. These are:
– GT1749vc Hybrid Turbo
– PD150 Injectors
– Airtec Front Mounted Intercooler
– Decat Exhaust System
– K&N Filter
– Darkside EGR Delete Pipe

Custom Remap Time

With the customer sitting in our viewing area he could see both his car being custom remapped and the dyno results on our big screen. As he sat their watching the power increase, run by run as the custom remap was adjusted I could the smile on his face getting bigger and bigger.

Kind words from the customer

It’s still putting a smile on my face can’t thank you enough for the customer service and friendly staff, I have already recommended you to my mates and hopefully I’ll be back in the future.

Sunbeam Alpine Rolling Road Health Check

1965 Sunbeam Alpine Rolling Road Health Check

The Sunbeam Alpine is a sporty two-seat convertible car from Rootes Group’s Sunbeam car marque. The original car was launched in 1953 as the first vehicle from Sunbeam-Talbot to bear the Sunbeam name alone since the 1935 takeover of Sunbeam and Talbot by the Rootes Group. The Alpine was “borrowed” from the Sunbeam-Talbot 90 Saloon, and has become commonly known as the “Talbot” Alpine. It was a two-seater sports roadster initially developed by Sunbeam-Talbot dealer George Hartwell in Bournemouth, as a one-off rally car. The car has a four-cylinder 2267 cc engine from the saloon, but with a raised compression ratio. However, since it was developed from the saloon platform, it suffered from rigidity compromises despite extra side members in the chassis. The gearbox ratios were changed, and from 1954 an overdrive unit became standard. The gear change lever was column-mounted.
The Series IV 1964–65, with the lower-output engine option being dropped with convertible and hardtop versions, they now sharied the 82 bhp engine with single Solex carburettor. A new rear styling was introduced with the fins largely removed. Automatic transmission with floor-mounted control became an option, but was unpopular. From autumn 1964 a new manual gearbox with synchromesh on first gear was adopted in line with its use in other Rootes cars. A total of 12,406 were made.

Holbay Engine Tune up

The Sunbeam Alpine that we have on the dyno today has been fitted with a Holbay racing engine from Holbay Engineering. Holbay Engineering was a small family run British engineering company specializing in engine modifications and race tuning. Although they enjoyed much success during the 1960s and 1970s with their competition race engines, they are best remembered today for their work on the Rootes 1725cc OHV engines as used in the Hillman Hunter GLS and Sunbeam Rapier H120.

The Sunbeam Alpine had come in for a health check on the dyno after the owner had notice it had been struggling start and was running a little bit lumpy. Now being 50 years old the car needed the ignition timing which we used a timing light and the fuelling adjusted at the carburettor. Unfortunately when we had the car on the dyno we noticed the inlet manifold wasn’t sitting right and on further investigation is was decided that the gasket needed to be changed but the car will be back…so watch this space 😉

But we did manage to get this footage of the Sunbeam Alpine on the dyno

Club GTi held a rolling road day at ADE Tuning this weekend for their members to come down and see what power their cars where making. The club members came from as far as Cardiff and Cumbria, showing some real dedication to the club. We opened the doors at 10am and already a few cars had parked up and were ready to sign up to go on the dyno. As the morning went on more club members arrived, not everyone put a car on the dyno but they came down to support each other and see how the cars did. We even had a visit from some of the Unphased guys who put a few cars on they dyno. It was a brilliant day and we got to chat with some real enthusiast and actually put faces to some of the forum names. We hope to see some of the guys again down at the workshop, if not no doubt we will meet up again at GTi International or on a track some day soon.
