Another vehicle taking advantage of an ADE Tuning DPF Solution package deal.

This 3.0l BMW X5 had been struggling in limp mode for the last few months due to a choked up dpf filter. Using the ADE Tuning dpf solution package the car was taken out of limp mode and back to the original driving experience.

A clogged dpf filter can result in diesel soot backing up into the engine. This can cause damage to the VGT actuator, turbo, fuel injectors and EGR solenoid. Also, the un-burned fuel injected into the exhaust system can go into the crankcase contaminating the engine oil.

The owner also opted for a custom remap. So the car was taken over to the 4wd rolling road and custom remapped from 235bhp to 294bhp 😁

As with any filter, they ‘filter out’ or trap particles. In the case of the DPF it is the harmful diesel exhaust soot particles. This means they have to be emptied regularly to maintain performance. The DPF needs to be cleaned regularly and this is done through a process called regeneration. This can be done by either active, passive or forced regeneration. Basically the accumulated soot is burnt off at high temperature (around 600°c) leaving only a residue of ash. This is effectively renewing or regenerating the filter, ready to take on more pollution from the engine.

Why does my Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) block

Every vehicle type and engine combination can have differing reasons as to why the filter blocks. The rate of particulates generated by the engine, the quality of the fuel, quality of the oil, driving style, even the location of the DPF in the exhaust system can all contribute to the filter blocking or not regenerating fully.

Generally, the problems arise in around town stop/ start driving where the regeneration process might not complete. A warning light will appear or a message indicating the DPF is full displays on the dash. Continuing to drive in the same manner and the soot build up will increase until other warning lights illuminate and the vehicle will go into ‘limp’ mode, where driving speed is restricted.

And this is what had happened to the Vauxhall Insignia. No longer would the DPF regenerate even after a forced regenerate at all. As a result of this the car had gone that badly into limp mode that it had to be recovered to the workshop.

DPF Solution from ADE Tuning

With the DPF removed from the exhaust system it was clear to see how badly this filter was. It was absolutely caked in soot and this was the reason that the car had to gone in to limp mode. With the DPF no longer an issue the ecu of the Vauxhall Insignia was reprogrammed with our DPF solution software.

The car was rebuilt back up and an full oil and filter service performed. It is important to change the oil and the oil filter as a blocked DPF filter can cause diesel to end up in the oil.

It now drives like it should all thanks to ADE Tuning DPF Solution 🙂

Motorhome Remap after DPF Issues

After slowly making its way to the workshop, this motorhome was in need of some diagnostics after going into limp mode. After plugging the motorhome into the diagnostic machine it came up with fault codes that we see when a vehicle has dpf issues. So this was the first place that we would look.

The dpf on this 2012 Fiat Ducato 42 Multijet motorhome was quite accessible underneath, so we removed it see how the motorhome ran. We started up the engine and took it out for a short test drive, it drove perfectly, confirming our diagnosis.

Now we knew for sure that the dpf was the issue we cut open the casing of the dpf and this is what we found…

The dpf had become so hot when trying to regenerate the actual filter had imploded completely blocking it up. As you can see in the picture below nothing could move through the filter and this was what had caused the motorhome to go into limp mode.

With the dpf removed and the casing fitted back into place we began the task of reprogramming the ecu with the dpf software and then a remap. The motorhome remap taking it to around 180bhp.

Ford Transit Connect

In for the Ford Transit Connect DPF Package (dpf delete, egr valve blank and custom remap), with only 30,000 miles on the clock this van was already on it’s second dpf filter. The first one had been replaced as it had become blocked up sending the van in to limp mode (a safety mode the vehicle goes into when the ecu computer recognizes a problem in it’s logic. Once Limp Mode engages, the engine will only run at very low rpms and be barely able to move). When the same problem occurred with the second dpf filter he got in contact with us.

Diesel Particulate Filter

No one really seems to know about the diesel particulate filter until it fails on the car and although according to the manufacturers’ a passive regeneration will happen when the DPF reaches a certain temperature naturally, this doesn’t always work which can lead to all sorts of issues.

DPF Software

With the van on the ramp it was time to remove the dpf casing and the dpf filter. With the empty casing replaced the van ready for the dpf software and the custom remap. The dpf software has to be programmed into the ecu otherwise there is a chance that fuel will be thrown into the empty casing which will definitely do the van no favours. Dpf software programmed into the ecu and the van was strapped down to the rolling road.

Custom Remap

As a standard van the Transit Connect will pull 74bhp and we checked this by running the van on the rolling road before writing the custom remap. Having established that the van was now running correctly it was time to custom remap the van. With the Transit Connect remapped with gains of 30bhp it was time for the customer to test drive the van.

Although we have increased the power of the van with the custom remap, we also have improved the performance which in turn will improve the fuel consumption.

The Audi A8 is a four-door, full-size, luxury car manufactured and marketed by the German car manufacturer, Audi since 1994.
The A8 was previewed 2001 Frankfurt Motor Show by the Audi Avantissimo concept car. This concept introduced much of the technology later available on the series production A8 D3, including: Multi Media Interface, 6-speed automatic transmission with shift paddles, V8 bi-turbo engine (S8), self-levelling adaptive air suspension with continuously controlled damping, electric park brake, bi-xenon headlights with static Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS) curve headlights, dashboard, driver identification systems with fingerprint scanner. The D3 generation A8 introduced the 315 bhp 4.2-litre Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) V8 engine subsequently uprated to 322 bhp. The engine uses two turbochargers and two intercoolers, with each turbocharger functioning exclusively for one bank of four cylinders.


Blocked dpf

After failing to regenerate the dpf had become blocked and was causing the car to go into limp mode. After contacting Audi to enquire about the price, he then contacted us to see what we could do for him. After a chat about how we remove the dpf and how we reprogram the ecu not to regenerate he booked in. But not only did he book in for the dpf delete and software, he took advantage of our dpf delete, egr blank and custom remap package.

As you will already know we only have a 2wd dyno, making it impossible to dyno a 4wd car. So we have to head over to a 4wd dyno to write the custom remap. The results speak for themselves.
